Rural women in South Africa are transforming their lives through beadwork, thanks to a thriving business initiative.

Bomikazi Nomlala has spearheaded a project that allows women from disadvantaged communities to sell handcrafted beadwork internationally. Initially a small community upliftment effort, Chareb Accessories has grown to employ 28 artisans across the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga.

Empowering Women Through Beadwork in South Africa

Chareb Accessories, founded by Bomikazi Nomlala, has become a beacon of hope for rural women. The initiative began with just three women and has expanded significantly, providing sustainable income opportunities. Nomlala’s mentorship and training through the Craft & Design Institute (CDI) have been pivotal in this growth.

The CDI offers resources and support, enabling artisans to enhance their skills and market their products effectively. This partnership has opened doors for these women, allowing them to balance their craft with family responsibilities.

Key Contributions of the Craft & Design Institute

The CDI plays a crucial role in fostering creative entrepreneurship in South Africa. By launching the Circular Maker Space at the V&A Waterfront, they provide a platform for designers and makers to access tools and networks essential for growth. This initiative not only supports local artisans but also contributes to the broader creative economy.

Over the past decade, CDI has reportedly leveraged more than R200m in direct investment in local small businesses, securing an additional R420m in further investment. This has led to the creation of thousands of sustainable jobs across the country.

Future Prospects for Chareb Accessories and CDI

  • Continued mentorship and training for artisans.
  • Expansion of product offerings to meet international demand.
  • Further investment in local small businesses through CDI initiatives.

Chareb Accessories is not just a business; it’s a movement empowering rural women across South Africa.
