Africazine:

Florence is undergoing significant railway infrastructure upgrades that will impact train services.

The Rete Ferroviaria Italiana is replacing the “Ponte al Pino” road overpass at the Florence railway hub. This complex project will involve the suspension of rail traffic from 11:00 PM on July 26 to 11:00 AM on July 30, affecting multiple train lines.

Florence’s Major Railway Upgrade Underway

The new bridge, weighing approximately 550 tons, will be erected using a 2,000-ton crane, one of the largest in Europe for such projects. This operation follows the removal of the existing deck, marking a significant phase in the renovation of the Florence railway hub.

The construction site is located in a highly urbanized area, presenting technical and organizational challenges. RFI emphasizes the importance of this project in enhancing the safety and reliability of the railway and road infrastructure in Florence.

Florence: Key figures on Train Service Disruptions

  • Suspension of rail traffic from 11:00 PM on July 26 to 11:00 AM on July 30
  • Reduction of approximately 50% in scheduled trains at the Florence hub
  • Travel times for long-distance connections expected to increase by up to approximately two hours and thirty minutes
  • Four trains guaranteed every hour to/from Florence Santa Maria Novella
  • Three trains guaranteed every hour to/from Florence Campo di Marte

Travel Alternatives During Construction

During the disruption, long-distance trains will continue to operate on the Tyrrhenian line, ensuring connectivity between major cities. Passengers can expect bus services to bridge gaps between Florence Santa Maria Novella and Florence Campo di Marte stations, adding approximately one hour and thirty minutes to travel times.

All changes to timetables and routes are available through railway companies’ sales channels and RFI’s information platforms.

Next Steps for Florence’s Railway Project

  • Completion of the bridge installation by July 30
  • Rescheduling of train services during the construction period
  • Monitoring of travel times and service reliability post-construction

Florence’s railway infrastructure upgrades will enhance safety and reliability for travelers.
