South Africa is at a critical juncture in enhancing its manufacturing and export capabilities.
President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized the need for improved performance in the country’s ports and rail network to maintain global competitiveness. This statement coincided with Toyota South Africa’s launch of the ninth-generation Hilux, backed by a R10.4bn investment at its Prospecton plant in Durban.
Ramaphosa Highlights Importance of Logistics
During the official line-off ceremony, Ramaphosa stated that efficient logistics are essential as nations compete for investment and export markets. He noted that reliable ports and modern infrastructure are not just transport assets; they are crucial economic infrastructure.
Transnet’s vehicle terminals in Durban, Gqeberha, and East London achieved a record productivity of over 792,000 fully built vehicles in the ten months leading to February this year. This performance underscores the potential of South Africa’s logistics sector.
The government plans to expand public-private partnerships in ports and rail to bolster South Africa’s export platform for manufacturers. This initiative aligns with Toyota’s commitment to the region, enhancing its role in the global production network.
Key Investments in the Automotive Sector
The R10.4bn investment by Toyota is a significant boost for South Africa’s automotive industry, which contributes about 5% to the country’s GDP. This investment not only expands the Prospecton facility but also strengthens local suppliers, with approximately one-third of the spending directed towards local tooling and support.
Moreover, suppliers have invested an additional R2bn to enhance localization efforts. The automotive sector supports over 115,000 direct manufacturing jobs and more than 500,000 jobs across the broader value chain, highlighting its importance to the economy.
Future Directions for South Africa’s Manufacturing
- Strengthening support for automotive component manufacturing and battery value chains.
- Encouraging research, innovation, and skills development linked to new-energy vehicles.
- Implementing a critical minerals strategy to enhance local processing and manufacturing.
South Africa is poised to leverage its resources and manufacturing capabilities for future mobility.
