University of Johannesburg Ranked Top in Africa for Sustainability Impact

The University of Johannesburg has achieved a significant milestone in sustainability rankings.

It has been ranked first in Africa and South Africa in the 2026 Times Higher Education sustainability impact ratings, placing 39th globally. This recognition underscores the university’s commitment to sustainability and societal impact, as it also climbed into the global top 300 in QS rankings and reached 281st in the US News rankings.

UJ Leads Africa in Sustainability Impact Ratings

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has secured the top spot in Africa and South Africa for sustainability, as per the 2026 Times Higher Education ratings. This ranking highlights UJ’s performance in eight of the 17 UN sustainable development goals, showcasing its dedication to addressing pressing societal challenges.

UJ’s vice-chancellor, Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi, emphasized that this achievement reflects the university’s mission to make a real difference in communities. The university aims to integrate sustainability into its core operations, focusing on innovation and inclusive development.

Key Achievements in Global Rankings

In addition to its sustainability ranking, UJ has made notable strides in other global university rankings. It entered the QS world university rankings for the first time, achieving 292nd place, and climbed to 281st in the US News & World Report rankings. These accomplishments further solidify UJ’s position as a leading institution in higher education.

UJ’s strong research performance has been a driving force behind these rankings. It has retained its status as South Africa’s leading producer of accredited research outputs, contributing 13.52% of the country’s total.
