Ghana is actively pursuing increased Chinese investment in mineral processing, exploration, and technology to enhance the value derived from its natural resources.
Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Sulemana Yusif led a Ghanaian delegation in discussions with Sui Guohua, Vice-Chairperson of the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in Nanning on Thursday, November 5. The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between Ghana and China, focusing on investment opportunities in mineral exploration, industrial development, technology transfer, and local value addition.
Ghana’s Strategic Push for Chinese Investment
The Ghanaian delegation’s discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration in mineral processing and exploration. Mr. Yusif emphasized Ghana’s rich mineral reserves, including gold, bauxite, iron ore, graphite, lithium, and manganese, as key assets for economic growth. He noted that mining contributed approximately 9.98 per cent of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product in 2025.
Gold production in Ghana reached a record 5.94 million ounces, positioning the country as the sixth-largest gold producer globally and the largest in Africa. This achievement underscores the potential for further development in the mining sector.
Investment Opportunities in Ghana’s Mining Sector
During the talks, Mr. Sui expressed Guangxi’s interest in expanding cooperation with Ghana in mineral development and related industrial projects. The discussions also covered the need for technical expertise and skills development to enhance local participation in the mining value chain.
Ghana’s government aims to not only increase mineral output but also to foster local industries and create jobs. This approach seeks to ensure that a larger share of the economic benefits from mineral resources remains within the country.
Next Steps for Ghana and China Cooperation
- Convert shared interests into practical investment partnerships.
- Enhance collaboration in responsible small-scale mining.
- Focus on environmental protection and local value addition.
Ghana is seeking to maximize the benefits of its mineral resources through strategic partnerships.
