Africazine:

Funding higher education in South Africa is a collective responsibility that extends beyond government support.

The University of Pretoria (UP) is actively implementing initiatives to provide financial assistance to students, particularly as the 2026 Autumn Graduation approaches. Out of 13,221 students graduating this month, approximately 6,405, or 48.4%, received various forms of funding, with significant contributions from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and UP-managed bursaries.

University of Pretoria’s Commitment to Student Funding

UP emphasizes that financial support encompasses more than just tuition fees. Rikus Delport, UP Spokesperson, highlighted that the university’s assistance includes nutrition support, psychosocial services, and other interventions aimed at ensuring academic success. This holistic approach is designed to help students complete their studies without financial barriers.

In recent years, UP has consistently provided substantial financial support. In 2024, 55% of the 12,511 students graduating received assistance, while in 2025, nearly half of the 12,950 graduates benefited from financial aid. This ongoing commitment illustrates UP’s dedication to fostering an environment where students can thrive academically.

Degrees Delivered Campaign Launch

UP is set to launch the Degrees Delivered campaign, aimed at helping graduates who have completed their studies but are unable to graduate due to outstanding student debt. This initiative seeks to mobilize the university community, including alumni and donors, to clear historical debts and enable these graduates to receive their qualifications.

The campaign is designed to have an immediate impact, addressing a critical barrier to graduation. Each degree released not only represents a certificate but also opens doors to employment opportunities and contributes to South Africa’s economic growth.

Next Steps for UP’s Initiatives

  • Launch of the Degrees Delivered campaign.
  • Continued financial support for students in upcoming graduation seasons.
  • Engagement with the university community to mobilize resources for debt clearance.

UP’s initiatives reflect a strong commitment to ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder student success.
