Egyptian Genome Project Takes Off: Athletes’ Data Handed Over to Kickstart Implementation Phase!

Egypt Takes a Bold Step Forward with the Launch of the Egyptian Genome Project

Cairo – May 26, 2025: Egypt is making significant strides in the realm of science with the launch of the implementation phase of the revolutionary Egyptian Genome Project. This ambitious initiative kicked off with a ceremony to hand over genome data from athletes, branded as Gene-Next, showcasing the country’s commitment to blending sports with cutting-edge scientific research.

At a vibrant ceremony filled with optimism, key figures such as Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, and Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, the Minister of Youth and Sports, graced the occasion. Their presence underscored the government’s dedication to enhancing both athletic performance and public health through genetic insights. Also present was Dr. Awad Tag El-Din, Advisor to the President for Health and Prevention Affairs, among other dignitaries.

Dr. Abdel Ghaffar passionately articulated the project’s potential, emphasizing that by analyzing Egyptian genomes on a larger scale, the nation can tailor health programs to individual needs and significantly reduce disease occurrences. This approach not only caters to athletic excellence but also contributes to a healthier population, reflecting a dual commitment to sports and public health.

The broader vision driving this initiative is rooted in the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who envisions science as the backbone of national development. “True human development begins with understanding the individual—genetically, physically, and mentally,” he said. The full backing of the government signifies a holistic approach to leveraging science for national progress.

Dr. Ayman Ashour, who has shown exceptional enthusiasm for the project, proudly declared it the first of its kind in Africa and the Middle East. With an impressive investment of EGP 2 billion, this project marks a major leap forward in scientific and medical research in Egypt.

Launched in 2021, the Egyptian Genome Project boasts collaboration among 15 universities, research institutions, NGOs, and four ministries, all coordinated by the Center for Medical Research and Regenerative Medicine. This collective effort showcases Egypt’s ambition not only to become a leader in genetic research but also to enhance the health standards of its citizens.

As the Egyptian Genome Project unfolds, it’s clear that the future looks bright for innovation in sports and health. With such forward-thinking projects, Egypt is not only carving a niche in the scientific community but is also setting an inspiring example for other nations in Africa and beyond.
