South Africa Welcomes Professor Mariana Mazzucato to the G20 Presidency

In an exciting move for South Africa’s economic strategy, President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the appointment of the renowned Professor Mariana Mazzucato as a Technical Expert for the nation’s G20 Presidency. This is not just a ceremonial role; Mazzucato will also serve as the Special Presidential Representative for Taskforce 1, which is dedicated to promoting Inclusive Economic Growth, Industrialization, Employment, and Reducing Inequality—issues that are increasingly critical in today’s rapidly evolving global economy.

Africazine reports that Mazzucato, an esteemed economist known globally for her groundbreaking work on rethinking the role of the state, green growth, and innovation, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. The Presidency released a statement highlighting her impressive credentials, noting that her insights will be pivotal in advancing South Africa’s initiatives for sustainable development and economic reform. She will also lend her expertise to Taskforce 3, which focuses on Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance, and Innovation for Sustainable Development, signalling a robust commitment to integrating technology in tackling contemporary challenges.

Furthermore, Mazzucato will play a vital role in supporting various working groups, such as those focused on Trade, Investment, and Sustainable Finance, all integral to shaping international economic policies. Under Ramaphosa’s leadership, South Africa is embracing the G20 theme of “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” aiming to lead conversations that drive resilient economic development, especially for developing nations.

Mazzucato has been affiliated with the President’s Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) since 2019, where she has provided strategic advice on green industrial strategies and the reform of state-owned enterprises. Her appointment is an indication of Ramaphosa’s commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable transformation within the economy, aiming not only to uplift South Africa but also to set a precedent that other nations in Africa can look to emulate.

With a focus on collaboration and innovation, this appointment represents a significant step towards enhancing South Africa’s standing on the global economic stage. As the G20 meetings approach, the country is poised to advocate effectively for policies that promise long-term benefits for developing countries and play a leading role in fostering a sustainable and equitable future.
