Unveiling the Magic of Nature: Faust Park's Whimsical Woods Takes Flight
Andries Alberts, the dedicated maintenance supervisor at Faust Park, believes passionately that the enchantment of nature—akin to the wonder of childhood—deserves to be cherished and nurtured. With this philosophy in mind, Alberts took it upon himself to create something extraordinary—a fairy garden that transforms the way children engage with the outdoors.
The idea first sparked during a team-building exercise for the St. Louis County Parks in October 2022, inspired by the picturesque fairy gardens found in Forest Park, only with a twist. Alberts envisioned a larger, more enchanting space that could provide both joy and educational opportunities for youngsters. After presenting his concept as both a park ranger and, later, as a maintenance supervisor, he was convinced that Faust Park was the ideal location—especially given its popularity among families.
Fast forward several years and a remarkable collaboration involving hundreds of volunteers, and the Whimsical Woods nature play area finally opened its doors on October 18. Nestled at the northern tip of the park near the Webster University Community Music School, this nature wonderland has been developed with minimal cost—around just 0—thanks to the abundance of land in St. Louis County and the collective efforts of the community. “We aim to transform part of a forest into an imaginative play space,” Alberts explains. “It’s educational for children as they explore the forest while also letting their imaginations run free.”
Sustainability was a core element in crafting Whimsical Woods. Each fairy house is created from recycled materials, including picnic tables and branches salvaged from storm damage. “By repurposing materials that would usually go to waste, we’re making a positive impact,” Alberts noted. The joy on children’s faces has been a substantial motivator for everyone involved, inspiring them to continue expanding this magical haven.
Looking ahead, Alberts envisions Whimsical Woods growing from its current 150 yards of trail and 200 magical houses to a sprawling 2-mile trek featuring over 1,000 whimsical homes. “Our goal is to provide children with an immersive 2-mile adventure where they can discover hidden wonders among varying landscapes,” he says, revealing his aspirations for a place where imagination has no bounds.
The craftsmanship of tiny cabins, enchanting tree houses, and whimsical creatures wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of other parks workers and members of the St. Louis Woodworkers Guild. These artisans have brought a level of creativity and intricacy that elevates the fairy garden to new heights.
Originally hailing from Namibia in Southwest Africa, Alberts has always held a deep appreciation for conservation. After relocating to the United States to be closer to family after the birth of their son, he found that both American and African conservation ideals align: foster a sense of joy and respect for the natural world. “It’s crucial for the younger generation to understand the importance of nature. The fairy garden serves as a wonderful platform for early education,” he emphasizes.
Volunteers from local schools played a vital role in the creation of this enchanting space by helping to clear and pave trails. Looking to the future, Alberts hopes to enlist professional woodcarvers to sculpt faces into stumps throughout the woods, making the space even more engaging for children.
“Nature is an incredible entity,” Alberts summarizes. “There are no hidden motives—just the pure magic of beauty and wonder waiting to be discovered. Everyone should take a moment to pause, appreciate, and see the magic all around.”
As Whimsical Woods continues to grow, it stands as a shining example of how creativity, community, and respect for nature can weave together to inspire the next generation. Let’s celebrate such innovative initiatives that enhance our world!
