South African women entrepreneurs are gaining vital skills through a new initiative aimed at enhancing their business capabilities.

Sixty-one women completed a two-week workshop under the Global Female Entrepreneurship Empowerment Program, led by Beijing Foreign Studies University. The program focuses on strengthening entrepreneurial skills through education and practical training, fostering business cooperation.

Women Entrepreneurs Transforming Their Businesses

Beauty Sonny, a participant and director of Monenebe Maintenance and Projects, described the workshop as a “14-day MBA.” She emphasized that the course provided practical tools, such as the Business Model Canvas, which helped her identify weaknesses in her business model and rethink sustainability strategies.

Naomi Mashigo, another participant, shared her journey from running a small shop to managing a supermarket that employs 14 people. She highlighted the challenges of expansion, particularly in finance and staff management, and noted that the training offered valuable insights tailored to real business scenarios.

Key Support from Chinese Partners

The workshop also facilitated connections between participants and Chinese businesses operating in South Africa. Program leader Gui Bo noted that many entrepreneurs were introduced to Chinese business resources and potential technical solutions. This collaboration aims to enhance business operations and foster innovation.

South African First Lady Tshepo Motsepe attended a related event, emphasizing the importance of small businesses in job creation and expressing gratitude to China for providing such training opportunities.

Future Collaborations and Opportunities

  • Participants are encouraged to explore further cooperation with Chinese partners.
  • Plans to deepen cooperation between BFSU and local enterprises are underway.
  • Entrepreneurs like Beverly Matoro aim to develop new technologies in collaboration with Chinese firms.
