Professor Busisiwe Nkonki-Mandleni has been appointed Chairperson of Community Engagement South Africa, marking a significant milestone for MUT.
This appointment was made during the inaugural CESA Board Strategic Retreat at Nelson Mandela University on 29 June 2026. Professor Nkonki-Mandleni, who has nearly two decades of experience in community engagement, will lead efforts to enhance community engagement across South African public universities.
Professor Nkonki-Mandleni’s Leadership Role at CESA
As the newly appointed Chairperson, Professor Nkonki-Mandleni will oversee CESA’s core mandate, which includes advocating for support and evaluating community engagement initiatives. Her leadership is expected to strengthen the connection between universities and their communities.
MUT has a longstanding relationship with CESA, having hosted the transition from the South African Higher Education Community Engagement Forum to CESA in November 2025. This transition marked a pivotal moment in enhancing governance and community engagement in higher education.
