Ho Chi Minh City is gearing up for a significant expansion of its urban railway network, aiming to meet the growing demand for skilled labor.
Over the next five years, the city plans to complete six metro lines totaling 187 km, with a vision to operate 14 lines by 2035, reaching 462 km. To support this ambitious project, the city will require around 70,000 workers by 2030, including 30,000 for operations and maintenance.

The urban railway development plan in Ho Chi Minh City is set to transform the public transport landscape. The completion of Metro Line No. 2 (Ben Thanh–Tham Luong) is expected by 2030, along with extensions of other key lines. The total length of these projects will reach 180 km, enhancing connectivity across the metropolis.
Currently, the operation of Metro Line No. 1 (Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien) employs 700 personnel, managing nearly 200 train trips daily. As the city invests in more metro lines, the demand for skilled workers will increase significantly.
Training Initiatives for Skilled Workers
To meet the workforce needs, Ho Chi Minh City has developed a human resources training scheme approved by the municipal People’s Committee. This initiative focuses on preparing project management personnel, operations staff, engineers, and technical workers. Universities and research institutes are prioritizing the training of specialized engineers, particularly in smart transportation.
The city’s training plan for 2030–2045 aims to double the workforce needed compared to the previous period, ensuring a steady supply of skilled labor for the expanding metro network.
