Telecom Egypt is set to enhance its digital infrastructure with a new subsea cable project.
The company has signed an agreement to construct a 200-kilometre subsea cable linking Sharm El Sheikh and Taba. This cable will extend the Red Sea Subsea Festoon Cable System and is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2027, boasting a capacity of approximately five petabits per second.
New Subsea Cable to Boost Connectivity
The Sharm El Sheikh–Taba link aims to improve connectivity between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean through Egypt’s Internet Corridor of Egypt (ICE). Utilizing advanced fiber-optic technology, the cable is designed to minimize signal losses while enhancing network performance.
This project will offer international carriers and network operators additional routing options between Asia, Africa, and Europe. Telecom Egypt anticipates that this new subsea path will enhance network resilience and routing flexibility.
Strengthening Egypt’s Digital Role
H.E. Raafat Hendy, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, emphasized that this agreement reflects Egypt’s commitment to bolstering its digital infrastructure. The new cable will reinforce Egypt’s pivotal role in global digital connectivity and support the growing demand for secure and efficient data transmission.
Telecom Egypt’s Managing Director, Tamer El Mahdi, noted that this project aligns with the company’s strategy to enhance its digital infrastructure and strengthen its international position. The Sharm-Taba cable represents a significant milestone in expanding Telecom Egypt’s subsea infrastructure.
Upcoming Steps for the Project
- Project scheduled to enter service in Q4 2027.
- Power Sub Link will implement the subsea cable.
