Zimbabwe faces a significant repatriation wave as nearly 100,000 citizens return from South Africa.

Since May 28, 99,418 Zimbabweans have come back home, with women and children making up 70% of the returnees. This surge follows rising tensions regarding immigration policies in South Africa.

Zimbabwe’s Government Responds to Repatriation Needs

The Zimbabwean government is actively managing the return of its citizens from South Africa. Information Minister Zhemu Soda reported that the repatriation efforts are based on a comprehensive report received by the Cabinet. The government is not only focused on Zimbabweans but is also assisting Malawians and Zambians who are transiting through Zimbabwe.

To handle the influx, border operations have been strengthened. This ensures a smoother process for the returnees, reflecting the government’s commitment to support its citizens during this challenging time.

Support Initiatives for Returnees in Zimbabwe

First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa has taken a hands-on approach by providing food and clothing to returnees at the Beitbridge Repatriation Center. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for assistance as more citizens arrive.

Healthcare services have also been mobilized, with healthcare workers treating several patients and screening 870 children for malnutrition. Additionally, 15 cases of diarrhea have been identified and treated, highlighting the urgent health needs of the returnees.
