The political landscape in Lagos is in turmoil following the controversial impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Desmond Elliot, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, revealed that he signed the notice for Obasa’s removal based on a directive from the Presidency. This revelation comes amid allegations linking Elliot to a plot against Obasa, which has sparked significant political controversy within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Desmond Elliot’s Role in the Impeachment

Desmond Elliot stated that he was outside Nigeria when the impeachment crisis unfolded on January 13, 2025. He was attending a family wedding in South Africa and was shocked to learn about the move against Obasa upon his return. Elliot believed the impeachment had presidential backing, which influenced his decision to sign the removal notice.

He mentioned that he was among the many lawmakers who signed the notice, thinking it was a directive from the presidency. Elliot later clarified that President Bola Tinubu informed them that the impeachment did not have his approval.

Lagos Assembly Crisis and Political Tensions

The crisis began when a majority of lawmakers accused Obasa of gross misconduct and poor leadership. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda was elected as the new speaker, marking a historic moment as the first woman to lead the Assembly. However, Obasa rejected the impeachment, claiming it was unconstitutional and lacked due process.

This political standoff led to weeks of tension within the Lagos Assembly and the APC, with competing claims to leadership and legal challenges. Reports indicated that the situation escalated to the presidency, prompting intervention from President Tinubu to resolve the conflict.

Next Steps in the Political Landscape
