Egypt is making strides in renewable energy with the launch of a major hybrid solar and battery project.

Scatec ASA has officially begun operations for the first phase of its 1.1 GW Obelisk project, which includes 561 MW of solar capacity and a 100 MW 200 MWh battery storage system. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing Egypt’s renewable energy landscape.

Obelisk Project Sets New Standards in Renewable Energy

The Obelisk project is being developed in two phases. The first phase, now operational, features 561 MW of solar capacity alongside a 100 MW 200 MWh battery energy storage system. Phase two will add an additional 564 MW of solar capacity and is currently under construction, with a Commercial Operations Date anticipated in the summer of 2026.

Scatec’s CEO, Terje Pilskog, emphasized the project’s rapid progress since the power purchase agreement was signed in September 2024. This achievement showcases Scatec’s ability to manage large-scale projects efficiently, aligning with Egypt’s goals to expand its renewable energy capacity and improve energy security.
