The Central University of Technology is making strides in inclusive science education.
Recently, the Welkom Campus hosted the second leg of the 2026 regional science fairs, attracting 678 learners from 67 schools for the Eskom Regional Expo Level 1 competition. This event showcased a commitment to fostering engagement in science, technology, and innovation, particularly among students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
Strong Participation from Disadvantaged Schools
The Welkom Expo highlighted the participation of 557 learners from schools lacking laboratory facilities. This significant involvement underscores the initiative’s reach and the collaborative efforts of CUT, Eskom, teachers, and parents to create opportunities for young people. The event serves as a platform for learners to explore their scientific interests and capabilities.
Prof. Mzikayise Binza, the Principal of Welkom Campus, praised the contributions of Eskom and the Eskom Foundation. He emphasized their long-standing commitment to youth development and the importance of mentorship from teachers and parents in nurturing students’ curiosity.
Future Plans for Science Education
Looking ahead, Prof. Binza proposed that Eskom and Sasol collaborate with CUT to establish a structured, year-round science, technology, and innovation program at the Welkom Campus. This initiative aims to provide mentorship, project incubation, and preparation for national and international competitions.
Additionally, he suggested the creation of co-branded CUT-Eskom science project boards and learning materials. This approach would transform the annual competition into a sustainable innovation pipeline, enhancing collaboration between the institutions and ensuring ongoing development of learners’ ideas and skills.
Next Steps for Collaboration
- Establish a structured year-round science program at Welkom Campus.
- Develop mentorship and project incubation initiatives.
- Create co-branded science project boards and learning materials.
Investing in science education today shapes the innovators of tomorrow.
