Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Zimplats) is taking bold strides towards a greener future with the kickoff of a major solar power project. As part of its renewable energy initiative, the company has begun constructing a 45 MW solar power plant, a notable advancement in its quest for energy independence and reduced reliance on the national grid.
This ambitious US million project was highlighted in Zimplats’ latest quarterly report, which covered the period ending September 30, 2025. During this time, the mining powerhouse allocated US million to the development and secured an additional US million for the project. With completion slated for the first half of 2027, this solar power plant will significantly enhance Zimplats’ commitment to sustainable energy.
Once up and running, the new facility will increase Zimplats’ total solar capacity to an impressive 80 MW. This project builds on the success of the company’s initial renewable energy endeavor—a 35 MW solar plant that commenced operations in August 2024. Together, these initiatives are part of a larger strategy to harness up to 185 MW of clean energy throughout Zimplats’ operations.
To spearhead this exciting venture, Zimplats is collaborating with Distributed Power Africa (DPA Zimbabwe), a subsidiary of the Econet Group, which is not only responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction but also for ongoing operations and maintenance. This partnership has been solidified through a long-term agreement established in 2021, with Zimplats financing these green projects as part of its capital expenditure plan.
Electricity produced from the Phase 2A solar plant will primarily be utilized for Zimplats’ mining, smelting, and refining activities in Ngezi and Selous. Furthermore, any surplus power generated will be directed back into the national grid, thanks to a net-metering arrangement with the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).
This investment is not just a move for Zimplats but also aligns with Zimbabwe’s national renewable energy objectives. By encouraging large industrial players to embrace on-site power generation, the initiative aims to bolster power reliability, stabilize production processes, and ultimately reduce carbon emissions across the mining sector.
As Zimplats continues to advance its solar energy capabilities, the path toward a sustainable future looks bright. The company foresees ongoing expansion of its solar portfolio, targeting the ambitious 185 MW milestone as it partners with DPA.
