“Unlocking Africa’s Future: The Urgent Need for Innovative and Sustainable Building Materials”

Embracing Sustainability in Design: Insights from Chemical and Allied Products at Design Week Lagos 2025

The lively atmosphere at Design Week Lagos 2025 was the perfect backdrop for Bolarin Okunowo, Managing Director of Chemical and Allied Products Plc (CAP), as she invited African designers, architects, and builders to rethink their approach to materials and design. Her call to action was clear: innovate with sustainability at the forefront of the built environment.

During her keynote address, titled “Colour, Materials & Innovation in Our Built Environment,” Okunowo highlighted the crucial role that CAP’s flagship brand, Dulux, plays in this transformation. With a focus on low-emission coatings and digital tools tailored for the African context, CAP aims to elevate both aesthetics and environmental responsibility.

“The future of the built environment will be shaped by materials that are not just beautiful, but also smart, efficient, and sustainable,” she declared, emphasizing the vital intersection of design and sustainability. Okunowo noted CAP’s commitment to developing low-VOC coatings, which not only enhance indoor air quality but also comply with rigorous global green building standards.

A spotlight was also placed on the innovative Dulux Tint-Base System, launched in 2022, allowing customers to access thousands of shades quickly. This user-friendly system is a game-changer for both homeowners and professionals, making the pursuit of the perfect color effortless. Okunowo mentioned the importance of proper surface preparation in achieving high-quality finishes, introducing attendees to CAP’s Caplux Surface Preparation range, which ensures surfaces are primed for success—literally setting the stage for durability and beauty.

In addition, Okunowo unveiled a revamped Dulux e-commerce platform, designed to simplify the selection and purchase process for customers nationwide. “This platform allows professionals and homeowners to explore, select, and order their preferred colours seamlessly, bringing Dulux’s trusted quality right to their doorsteps,” she explained.

Sustainability, with its numerous facets, was central to the discussions at the exhibition. “It’s not just about what we build, but how we empower others to build responsibly,” Okunowo stated. Her insights on color psychology emphasized how color not only alters spaces but also influences emotions and productivity. CAP’s decades of research into how color interacts with light and cultural contexts gives their customers a unique opportunity to express their identities through their spaces.

Throughout the week, attendees flocked to CAP’s interactive booth, eager to learn about the latest innovations in Dulux products and color technologies. The company engaged with design professionals through business-to-business sessions focused on color psychology, climate resilience, and sustainable practices.

CAP Plc’s participation for the second consecutive year at Design Week Lagos reinforces its mission of “Creating A New Africa Inspired by Colours.” As Okunowo and her team continue to drive sustainability, creativity, and innovation across the continent, the call to both designers and builders is clear: let’s build a future that honors our environment while celebrating the richness of African culture.
