In an exciting development for the African energy sector, Dutch offshore services giant Boskalis has announced the successful transport of a converted floating production unit (FPU) to Angola. This move is pivotal as the FPU will play a critical role in Congo’s inaugural natural gas liquefaction project, positioning the region as a key player in the global energy market.
The cargo, which was formerly one of the largest semi-submersible drilling rigs of its generation, is currently traversing the waters aboard Boskalis’s heavy transport vessel, the Blue Marlin. Standing tall at 80-by-68 meters and weighing 41,000 tons, the FPU is indeed impressive—it’s a bit wider than the Blue Marlin’s deck, yet it remains secure, showcasing the engineering prowess of Boskalis.
While Boskalis has not officially named the FPU being transported, company visuals suggest it is the Scarabeo 5, a conversion of Saipem’s drilling rig from the early 1990s. This remarkable unit was selected for its exceptional capabilities, illustrating why it has been repurposed as a floating gas treatment facility. Its upcoming deployment marks a significant milestone for the Eni-operated Congo LNG project.
Once the Scarabeo 5 is fully installed, it is set to become a pivotal hub for the offshore development of the Congo LNG project. Its primary mission will be to handle processed gas, sending it to the innovative Nguya floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit. This FLNG unit recently celebrated its own sail-away ceremony in Shanghai, enhancing excitement for its impending journey to Angola’s Marine XII concession.
As the energy landscape evolves, projects like this highlight the increasing collaboration and investment in Africa’s natural resources. With significant investment flows into renewable energy and gas liquefaction, the continent is poised to significantly contribute to the global energy supply.
