Zimplats Partners with Sandvik for Cutting-Edge Underground Mining Equipment
In a significant move that signals growth and innovation in Zimbabwe’s mining sector, Zimplats, the country’s premier platinum group metals producer, has announced a substantial partnership with Sandvik, a global leader in mining and rock technology. This collaboration involves the procurement of 28 advanced underground machines, destined for the Ngezi mines, located in the heart of the Hartley Geological Complex.
Set to be booked in the third quarter of 2025 and delivered between Q3 2025 and Q2 2026, the comprehensive package includes an impressive array of machinery: 12 Toro LH209L loaders, six Sandvik DD211L development jumbos, and various bolters and trucks. The inclusion of essential parts and service kits is designed to ensure long-term performance and robust operational efficiency at Zimplats’ Ngezi complex.
Historically, the Ngezi complex has evolved from open-pit operations to advanced underground mining, a shift that is paving the way for increased productivity and sustainability in the sector. The arrival of Sandvik’s state-of-the-art equipment is expected to further enhance Zimplats’ underground capabilities, reflecting a commitment to operational excellence.
“Partnering with Zimplats on this significant investment in their underground operations epitomizes our dedication to providing tailored, high-performance equipment and services,” commented Mats Eriksson, President of Sandvik Mining. His sentiments underscore the strong alignment between both companies in promoting safety, productivity, and environmental sustainability—a trifecta vital for modern mining operations.
Under the robust influence of Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats), which owns 87 percent of Zimplats, the company is strategically enhancing its underground capabilities while investing in new mines and concentrators. “This strategic acquisition of Sandvik’s fleet is vital for enhancing our safety, efficiency, and sustainability objectives,” noted Alexander Mhembere, CEO of Zimplats. “With Sandvik’s proven equipment and reliable service backing us, we are poised for remarkable advancement.”
This collaboration not only marks a milestone for Zimplats but also signals a brighter future for the Zimbabwean mining industry, showcasing its potential on the world stage. As Zimbabwe continues to harness its mineral wealth, such partnerships are pivotal for driving economic growth and technological advancements.
