Maamba Energy's Vision for Zambia: 700 Megawatts by Mid-2024
In an exciting announcement for Zambia’s energy landscape, Cyrus Minwalla, the CEO of Maamba Energy Limited (MEL), shared the company’s ambitious plans to contribute a significant 700 megawatts (MW) to the national grid by mid-2024. Currently, Maamba power plant is already generating 300 MW, and the upcoming expansion projects promise an additional 400 MW from its second phase. Notably, a further 100 MW will be derived from a solar initiative, diversifying the nation’s energy mix and aligning with global sustainability practices. This progressive approach not only supports Zambia’s renewable energy targets but also sets a quality standard for energy production across the continent.
During a recent media tour organized in collaboration with ZESCO, Mr. Minwalla emphasized MEL’s commitment to ensuring a reliable energy supply for Zambia. “Our top priority is to deliver the maximum possible power to ZESCO and the Zambian national grid,” he stated, underscoring the company’s dedication to excellence in maintenance and energy production. As ZESCO works to provide uninterrupted electricity to households and industries, the contributions from Maamba Energy will play a pivotal role in this effort.
Exciting advancements are already underway at the Maamba site. The CEO reported that preparations for the 300-MW thermal expansion are continuing smoothly, with land clearance completed and the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract nearing finalization. “The introduction of our solar project is a critical step in diversifying our energy portfolio. By mid-next year, we expect to be injecting another 100 megawatts from solar,” Mr. Minwalla added optimistically.
