Zimbabwe Unveils Ambitious US.4 Billion Agricultural Investment Initiative at Africa Food Systems Forum
In an exciting development for the agricultural sector, Professor Obert Jiri, the Permanent Secretary in Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, has announced a transformative US.4 billion investment strategy aimed at enhancing productivity across seven vital value chains. This announcement was made during the Africa Food Systems Forum 2025 in Dakar, Senegal, showcasing Zimbabwe’s commitment to agricultural growth and innovation.
At the forum, which brings together key stakeholders in the food systems, Professor Jiri outlined the investment focus areas, which include blueberries, dairy, beef, maize, sunflower, soybean, and poultry production. “Zimbabwe is open for business, and agriculture is no exception,” he declared, underscoring the country’s readiness to embrace sustainable agricultural practices and foster collaboration within the continent.
During a detailed discussion at the Livestock Ministerial Deep Dive session, Jiri highlighted the significant role livestock plays in Africa’s overall food security landscape. He stated, “Livestock is not a subsector; it is the bedrock of livelihoods.” This affirmation aligns with Africa’s broader goals to bolster food security, particularly in light of the challenges posed by climate change and rapid urbanization.
Jiri also shared Zimbabwe’s comprehensive agricultural recovery strategy, illustrating the resilience gains achieved thus far and the pressing need for vaccines and technical support across the continent. His call to action encouraged participants to shift from dialogue to implementation, reinforcing the urgency for collaborative efforts to ensure sustainable food systems.
The Africa Food Systems Forum 2025 is conducted under the auspices of the African Union’s Kampala Declaration (CAADP 2026–2035), which focuses on enhancing food security, fostering climate resilience, and promoting sustainable livelihoods across Africa. This initiative not only envisions a thriving agricultural sector but also aims to empower communities through enhanced food production and distribution systems.
As Africa grapples with the challenges of food insecurity, initiatives such as this one are critical in paving the way for a more stable agricultural future. It also positions Zimbabwe as a contender on the continental stage, ready to lead and innovate in the agricultural sector.
