Utility Unveils Exciting SA Projects in Bold 1.5 GW Renewable Energy Initiative!

EDF Power Solutions Drives Renewable Energy Growth in South Africa

In a bold leap forward for renewable energy, the French state-owned utility, EDF, is making significant strides in South Africa with a substantial investment in sustainable energy projects. The company has announced plans to construct a whopping 1.5 GW of renewable energy capacity across 11 sites, which will feature an exciting mix of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, wind farms, battery storage technology, and a crucial transmission substation for Eskom, South Africa’s main electricity supplier. This initiative falls under EDF’s newly launched international brand, EDF Power Solutions.

The consolidation of EDF Renewables and the International Division into EDF Power Solutions marks a strategic move to better serve public and private sector clients. Tristan de Drouas, Vice-President of EDF Power Solutions (Southern Africa), has indicated that the commissioning of these projects is anticipated between late 2025 and 2026. Notably, approximately 40% of the project’s total value is expected to be sourced locally, which emphasizes a commitment to supporting the South African economy.

The ambitious portfolio includes the Koruson 1 and 2 clusters, which comprise six wind farms strategically located in the Northern and Eastern Cape provinces. These farms—Phezukomoya, San Kraal, Coleskop, Umsobomvu, Mooi Plaats, and Hartebeesthoek—will be underpinned by a new main transmission substation that is being constructed to ensure seamless integration into Eskom’s grid.

Excitingly, EDF is also in the process of developing the innovative Umoyilanga virtual power plant. This project links two sites that are geographically distant: Avondale in the Northern Cape, which features solar and storage technologies, and Dassiesridge in the Eastern Cape, known for wind and storage capabilities. Together, they will deliver a remarkable 75 MW of dispatchable power to Eskom, further bolstering the country’s renewable energy capabilities.

Adding to this portfolio, EDF’s 77 MW/308 MWh Oasis 2 battery project was awarded under Bid Window 2 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme. This project aligns perfectly with South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan and acknowledges the increasing need for reliable energy storage solutions.

What’s more, EDF Power Solutions is not stopping at South Africa. The company is pursuing hydropower opportunities in Lesotho and throughout the Southern African region, showcasing a regional commitment to sustainable development. Current projects are also taking shape in Malawi, Mozambique, and Madagascar, complementing the recently commissioned 420 MW Nachtigal hydropower plant located in Cameroon.

With such ambitious and inclusive projects on the horizon, EDF is playing a crucial role in catalyzing the renewable energy revolution across Southern Africa, paving the way for a greener future and sustainable development in the region.
