Nigerian Government Champions Performance Management in Civil Service
In a significant development for Nigeria’s civil service, the Federal Government has announced a robust commitment to a Performance Management System aimed at enhancing the efficacy of civil servants. This initiative was highlighted during a three-day workshop entitled “Administrative Excellence Through Ethics, Discretion and Result-Driven Service,” which took place recently in Abuja, bringing together key figures in public service for discussions centered on ethical governance and productivity.
Nnamdi Mbaeri, the Permanent Secretary for General Services in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, underscored a transformative shift away from outdated office practices. “The era of lax office routines is over,” he declared. Mbaeri emphasized that moving forward, promotions, rewards, and recognitions will be firmly grounded in performance-based evaluations, in accordance with the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP 2021–2025).
This initiative signifies a critical step towards accountability and efficiency within the civil service, as Mbaeri elaborated: “This new system will track officers daily and reward high performers accordingly.” The emphasis on measurable results indicates a proactive approach to governance, ensuring that public servants are held to high standards of productivity.
Notably, the workshop was not merely about assessments; it also aimed to empower civil servants with vital skills and align their work ethic with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This agenda seeks to foster an environment conducive to efficiency, ethics, and unwavering accountability in public service.
The workshop also set the stage for a future where civil servants who demonstrate commitment and excellence can aspire to higher responsibilities and leadership roles. “Those who excel will be recognized—through promotion, material rewards, or official commendation,” Mbaeri stated, reinforcing the government’s dedication to fostering a dynamic and rewarding work environment.
Dr. Eugenia Ndukwe, the Principal Consultant and Managing Director of XEM Group, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the workshop’s crucial role in embedding ethical leadership and service excellence. “Our goal is to empower civil servants with the tools, knowledge, and ethical foundation to deliver high-impact service,” she remarked.
This ambitious push by the Nigerian government is not just about enhancing administrative skills but is a forward-thinking strategy to build a smarter, more responsive civil service capable of addressing the challenges of today and tomorrow. As civil servants gear up to embrace these changes, the hope is that Nigeria’s public service will become synonymous with efficiency and ethical standards, setting a benchmark for governance across Africa.
