“Government Urges Ongoing Maize Production to Boost Food Security and Support Farmers”

Government Champions Major Boost in Maize Production Amid Optimistic Price Increases

June 4, 2025

The Zambian government is calling on farmers across the nation to ramp up their maize production efforts, buoyed by a substantial increase in the purchase price—now set at K340 for a 50kg bag. This increase is viewed as a significant affirmation of the hard work and resilience demonstrated by farmers, particularly after facing the challenges of last year’s unfavorable weather conditions.

During a recent gathering in Eastern Province, Agriculture Minister Hon. Mutolo Phiri shared encouraging news with local farmers, emphasizing that the raised maize floor price serves as a well-deserved reward for their dedication. “The upturn in production, from 1.6 million metric tonnes last season to a projected 3.6 million metric tonnes this year, underscores the tireless efforts of our farmers,” Minister Phiri noted, attributing this remarkable response to President Hakainde Hichilema’s urging for increased agricultural productivity.

Minister Phiri, who also represents Chipata Central in Parliament, highlighted that the growth in purchase price from K150 to K340 reflects the government’s commitment to not only support farmers but also to stimulate a viable agricultural sector. “We aim for a future where Zambia can produce 10 million metric tonnes of maize, fostering both food security and economic growth,” he stated.

In an era where the economy needs invigorating, the Minister makes the case that increasing the maize purchase price should inspire more Zambians to invest their time and resources in farming. In a realm where agriculture serves as a backbone to the nation’s economy, this call to action resonates with citizens looking for sustainable sources of income.

Praising President Hichilema for his personal investment in agriculture—including his recent participation in maize harvesting—Phiri encouraged all Zambians to embrace farming. “It’s not just about food security; it’s about empowering our economy,” he added.

Phiri acknowledged ongoing conversations regarding the rising costs of mealie meal but gently reminded the public that reducing maize purchase prices could adversely affect farmers, many of whom are still recovering from last year’s weather adversities. “The true solution lies in boosting maize production at all societal levels,” he asserted.

The K340 purchase price was established after thorough discussions with stakeholders to ensure fairness and promote sustainability within the agriculture sector. In this light, Zambia is set to realize its potential as a leading agricultural nation, fostering an environment where prosperity comes from the ground up.

With the government taking decisive steps to bolster maize production, the future of Zambian agriculture looks bright, promising new opportunities for farmers and a strengthened economy.
