Southern Region Assembly Gathers: Key Discussions and Decisions Shaping Eritrea’s Future!

Southern Region Assembly in Eritrea Focuses on Conservation and Economic Development

In a significant gathering that highlights Eritrea’s commitment to sustainable growth, the Southern Region Assembly convened its 23rd regular meeting in Mendefera on February 12. The event, themed “Conservation of Resources: Cornerstone for Economic Development,” served as a platform for discussing crucial strategies to bolster the region’s economic landscape while embracing environmental stewardship.

During the meeting, Mr. Wolday Gebre, the Chairman of the Regional Assembly, emphasized the importance of public engagement in national development initiatives. He urged assembly members to collaborate closely with local communities to tackle ongoing challenges, reinforcing the idea that sustainable progress relies on collective efforts. “Public awareness is pivotal,” he stated, encouraging everyone to take an active role in driving positive change.

The regional governor, Mr. Habteab Tesfatsion, along with heads of various departments, presented comprehensive updates on the development programs slated for 2024 and beyond. Key discussions revolved around vital projects such as expanding social service institutions and establishing a regional museum—important cultural milestones for the region. Additionally, the assembly highlighted the need to enhance the economic foundation of sports activities, which can serve as a catalyst for community engagement and youth development.

A focus on agricultural integrity was also paramount, with topics such as strengthening regulations on cross-border trade concerning vital agricultural and veterinary medicines and chemical fertilizers being prioritized. This can help ensure both quality and sustainability in local farming practices.

Looking towards 2025, the Governor outlined ambitious plans that included water and soil conservation efforts, completing the construction of dams and micro-dams, and establishing kindergartens in public institutions to support early childhood development. These initiatives reflect a holistic approach to community development, prioritizing both infrastructure and education.

The assembly concluded with the adoption of several recommendations aimed at fostering innovation among the youth, encouraging farmers to utilize organic fertilizers, and promoting access to nutritious food. This focus on agrarian health and youth empowerment underscores a progressive vision for Eritrea’s future.

As Eritrea continues to navigate its path towards sustainable economic growth, the Southern Region Assembly is poised to play a crucial role in shaping policies that not only address immediate needs but also lay a foundation for long-term prosperity.
