A New Era for Climbing in Orihuela: The Launch of a Comprehensive Climbing Guide

The stunning landscapes of Orihuela are set to become a go-to destination for climbers, thanks to an exciting new initiative aimed at promoting the region’s outdoor adventure opportunities! Recently, Noelia Grao, the Environmental Counselor, along with key members from the local climbing community, including Gildo Conejero, David Mora, and Luis Abad from the Grupo de Montañismo de Orihuela (GOM), unveiled the highly anticipated guide titled “Climbing in Orihuela.”

This guide is more than just a collection of climbing routes; it’s a meticulously crafted tool designed to inform and inspire climbers by highlighting essential locations and key routes throughout the breathtaking mountain ranges surrounding Orihuela. Grao emphasized the guide’s role in showcasing the beauty of natural spaces while offering valuable information to adventurers eager to explore the region.

The guide showcases four premier climbing sites: Pared Negra, Triángulo Rojo, Momioit Llevantí, and Rincón de Bonanza. Each entry includes detailed descriptions, access points, signposts, climbing sectors, and descent routes, ensuring climbers are well-prepared for their outdoor escapades. Grao proudly stated that this is “the most comprehensive climbing guide ever created for Orihuela,” reflecting both a passion for climbing and a profound respect for the environment.

With climbing gaining traction as an increasingly popular sport, the guide also addresses broader outdoor activities available in the area, such as hiking. The collaboration between the local council and GOM not only supports the climbing community but also highlights their shared responsibility to care for the environment.

Luis Elías Abad explained that the roots of this project trace back to 2011, involving extensive research and mapping of climbing routes. Impressive statistics indicate that over 200 climbing routes are noted throughout the guide. Within just a week of launching the digital version, it was downloaded more than 1,000 times, further proof of Orihuela’s emerging status as a top climbing destination, particularly during the winter months.

Gildo Conejero extended his gratitude to the Environmental Department for their unwavering support, asserting that this resource will be invaluable for the climbing community at large. Best of all, the guide is available for free, signaling a commitment to making climbing accessible and enjoyable for everyone interested.

In summary, the launch of the “Climbing in Orihuela” guide marks a significant step forward for outdoor enthusiasts and the local economy. Not only does it celebrate the natural beauty of Orihuela, but it also embodies a collaborative spirit between environmental advocacy and recreational adventure. So whether you’re an experienced climber or a curious beginner, this incredible guide invites you to discover the stunning heights of Orihuela.
