Investing in the Future: Education as a Tool for Poverty Eradication in Zimbabwe
In an inspiring address highlighting the power of education, Brigadier-General (Retired) Levi Mayihlome, the Deputy Minister of Defence and a proud alumnus of Mzingwane High School, recently emphasized the transformative potential of investing in education during a bus commissioning ceremony at the school. He passionately communicated to parents, students, and community members the vital role of education in shaping a prosperous future, stating, “Investing in education is investing in the future.”
Mayihlome expressed gratitude to the parents for their commitment to their children’s education, especially for their unwavering support during fundraising efforts to acquire a new 72-seater Asia Star bus. This new means of transportation is set to ease accessibility issues, ensuring students can attend school and participate in extracurricular activities without hindrance.
Reflecting on the school’s remarkable turnaround, Mayihlome proudly noted the substantial improvements in academic performance. Under the stewardship of headmaster Mr. Stanley Tizori, Mzingwane High School has witnessed its Ordinary Level pass rates soaring from a mere 20% in 2020 to an impressive 50% by 2023. Even more strikingly, for the first time in eight years, the school achieved a commendable 100% pass rate in Advanced Level examinations. “As a former student at this school, it fills me with joy to see it rising to its former glory,” Mayihlome remarked.
Beyond academic excellence, the school is embracing sustainable practices with initiatives such as a thriving vegetable garden and a citrus project, which not only promote self-sufficiency but also enhance students’ learning experiences. The support from ZB Bank, evident in their financial investment and environmental contributions—including planting 15 trees—demonstrates the growing synergy between education and local business initiatives.
Mr. Tizori, the headmaster, praised the vital contributions of the School Development Committee, which plays an essential role in the school’s progress. He emphasized the community’s critical position in driving positive change, echoing Mayihlome’s sentiment that education is the pathway to poverty eradication.
As Mzingwane High School continues to thrive, it stands as an embodied testament to what collective effort and investment in education can achieve. It is not just a school; it represents hope and a brighter future for all students. Education, as outlined by Brigadier-General Mayihlome, is indeed a powerful tool, capable of lifting entire communities out of poverty and fostering a legacy of success for generations to come.
