The Bijagos Archipelago: A Jewel of Biodiversity and Heritage

The Bijagos Archipelago, a stunning chain of islands off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, has recently achieved a remarkable milestone, earning its esteemed title as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This accolade recognizes the archipelago’s unparalleled biodiversity and vibrant local traditions.

Nestled within the turquoise waters of West Africa, the nation’s rich ecosystem is home to a diverse range of species, including the endangered green and leatherback sea turtles, playful dolphins, majestic manatees, and a staggering 870,000 migratory birds. The defining highlight of this archipelago is the small island of Poilao, which serves as a vital nesting ground for green sea turtles, showcasing the region’s commitment to conservation and environmental stewardship.

Encompassing a continuous network of coastal and marine ecosystems, the Bijagos Archipelago features mangroves, mudflats, and intertidal zones, all of which are essential to sustaining aquatic life and maintaining ecological balance. As UNESCO’s spokesperson puts it, this unique marine ecosystem stands as a testament to the local communities, who have preserved their customs while coexisting harmoniously with nature.

A Decade of Dedication to Global Recognition

The recent UNESCO recognition is the culmination of over a decade of persistent efforts by diverse stakeholders, including the Government of Guinea-Bissau, local communities, and environmental advocates. Viriato Luis Cassama, the country’s environment minister, shared his heartfelt sentiments, stating, “This moment marks the culmination of more than 10 years of collective effort, commitment, dialogue, and a shared conviction that this extraordinary and unique place deserves to be recognized, protected, and celebrated by all of humanity.”

UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay commended the Bijagos Archipelago as a “rare coastal and marine ecosystem” and applauded the local inhabitants for their unwavering commitment to preserving their cultural heritage. The islands are not just a paradise for nature enthusiasts; they are also rich in history, with numerous sacred sites and thriving artisanal fisheries, showcasing the islanders’ sustainable practices.

Although the archipelago’s first attempt to gain World Heritage recognition in 2012 was unsuccessful, dedicated research and inclusive efforts involving local populations paved the way for its recent success. The Bijagos Archipelago has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1996, and its inclusion in the World Heritage list significantly enhances its protection as part of a larger global network of safeguarded sites.

Covering over 10,000 square kilometers and comprising 88 islands and islets, the Bijagos Archipelago stands as a remarkable symbol of biodiversity and cultural heritage. This recognition serves not only as a source of pride for Guinea-Bissau but also underscores the importance of preserving our planet’s natural treasures for future generations.
