Zambia is advancing its 830-km rail link to Angola’s Port of Lobito, aiming for financial closure by 2027. This development follows a high-level meeting with the Africa Finance Corporation.
President Hakainde Hichilema met with a delegation from the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) to discuss the Zambia–Lobito Railway project. AFC has selected preferred engineering, procurement, and construction bidders for both the Angolan and Zambian sections after an international competitive tender. The project anticipates handling roughly 2 million tonnes of freight per year, indicating strong commercial interest.
Zambia’s Railway Project to Angola’s Port
The 830-kilometre railway will connect Chingola in Zambia’s Copperbelt to Luacano in Angola. This new line will integrate with the existing Benguela Railway, providing a seven-day route to the Atlantic Port of Lobito. The project is expected to enhance trade and logistics in the region.
AFC aims to achieve financial close on the project in 2027, with support from partners including the African Development Bank, the European Union, and the United States Government. Discussions also included land acquisition for right-of-way and ancillary facilities, which will support agricultural, petroleum, and freight-handling operations.
