Africazine:

This Pride Month, Johannesburg invites creativity and activism through a unique workshop.

The CAMP and GALA Queer Archive are hosting a Protest Poster Making Workshop as part of the Acts of Care exhibition at the Latitudes Centre for the Arts. This free three-hour workshop encourages participants to explore the historical significance of community activism during the HIV/AIDS crisis while creating their own messages for today.

Join the Protest Poster Making Workshop

The workshop will take place on Saturday, 31 October 2026, from 10:00 to 13:00. It is designed for anyone aged 16 and older, regardless of their art experience. Participants will use paint, scissors, and slogans to craft their own posters, which will then be added to the exhibition’s living poster wall.

Acts of Care aims to foster a collective memory, allowing individuals to express what needs to be said in the current context of HIV/AIDS funding cuts affecting South Africa. The workshop builds on the exhibition’s existing poster-making station, where visitors can create both physical and digital posters using resources from the TAP and GALA archive.

Context of the Acts of Care Exhibition

Acts of Care is an Extended Reality exhibition that highlights how communities in Johannesburg and Soweto organized care and advocacy during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1990s. The exhibition features materials from the Township AIDS Project, showcasing the grassroots efforts to communicate vital information when institutional support was lacking.

Linda Chernis, Archivist at GALA Queer Archive, emphasizes the importance of feeling the weight of organizing care under pressure. The workshop not only honors the past but also addresses the ongoing relevance of community-led practices in the face of current challenges.
