Africazine:

Libya is taking significant steps to enhance its energy production while reducing environmental impact.

The newly completed offshore gas recovery installation at the Bouri field captures natural gas produced during crude oil extraction. This facility has a capacity of up to 700 million cubic metres a year and aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

Libya’s New Offshore Gas Recovery Initiative

The offshore installation is designed to capture gas that was previously flared during oil production. This initiative not only helps in supplying power stations but also plays a crucial role in lowering emissions. Eni has confirmed that the infrastructure is now in its start-up phase and is directly connected to existing sea facilities.

By transforming industrial gas into usable energy, Libya aims to bolster its domestic power supply. This project is part of a broader strategy to enhance energy infrastructure in the region.

Libya: Key figures on gas recovery

  • 700 million cubic metres a year
  • 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year
  • billion investment from Eni
  • billion investment from NOC

Strengthening Energy Supplies and Exports

This offshore development builds on previous energy projects, including the Sabratha compression venture at the Bahr Essalam field. Together, these projects could supply about 1.5 billion cubic metres of gas a year once fully operational. The captured gas will not only meet internal electricity demands across North Africa but also support potential exports to Europe through the Greenstream pipeline.

Future Steps in Energy Infrastructure Development

  • Continue start-up phase of the offshore installation
  • Monitor emissions reduction progress
  • Expand offshore energy infrastructure investments

This initiative marks a significant advancement in Libya’s energy strategy, focusing on sustainability and efficiency.
