McDonald’s South Africa is stepping up to tackle youth unemployment with a significant recruitment initiative.

The fast-food giant plans to enroll 2,370 young people in its upcoming Hospitality Programme, collaborating with the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority. This move comes as South Africa grapples with a youth unemployment rate of 60.9% for those aged 15-24, as reported by Stats SA.

McDonald’s Initiative to Combat Youth Unemployment

McDonald’s South Africa aims to provide valuable skills and employment opportunities through its learnership programme. The initiative builds on previous success, having already trained over 1,000 young individuals. Participants will receive a mix of classroom instruction and hands-on training in essential areas such as business finance and restaurant operations.

Dr. Mamello Masia, McDonald’s SA’s chief people officer, emphasized the importance of addressing the youth unemployment crisis. She noted that behind every statistic is a young person striving to build a future. The programme is designed to be a stepping stone into a career, not just a certificate.

Key Outcomes from Previous Cohorts

The first cohort in 2024/25 saw 1,400 learners, with 476 securing permanent positions at McDonald’s. More than 75% of those who completed the programme are now employed in the hospitality sector, while 1.5% have ventured into entrepreneurship. This success highlights the potential of practical training partnerships between the public and private sectors.

Cathsseta CEO Marks Thibela pointed out that the real measure of success lies in what learners achieve after completing the programme. The collaboration between McDonald’s and the education sector aims to bridge the gap between education and employment.

Next Steps for the Learnership Programme

  • Recruitment of 2,370 young people for the Hospitality Programme.
  • Continued collaboration with the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority.
  • Focus on practical partnerships to enhance skills development.

McDonald’s is taking action to empower South Africa’s youth through meaningful employment opportunities.
