The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) is advocating for the Rivers State Government to adopt a successful Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) model similar to that of Lagos State.

PETROAN’s National President, Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, highlighted Rivers State’s potential to develop a robust domestic gas economy due to its significant oil and gas production. He emphasized the need for a tailored approach that meets the specific transportation and industrial needs of Rivers.

PETROAN Calls for CNG Adoption in Rivers State

PETROAN has urged the Rivers State Government to study the CNG model implemented in Lagos. This model has proven beneficial in reducing transportation costs and enhancing energy security. Gillis-Harry pointed out that Rivers has the resources and strategic position to become a key player in the CNG sector.

The association proposed the establishment of a CNG Conversion and Transportation Programme in Rivers. This initiative would include conversion centers and financial incentives to facilitate the transition from petrol and diesel to CNG for commercial transport operators.

Rivers State’s Unique Advantages for CNG Development

Rivers State is well-positioned to leverage its industrial base and gas resources. PETROAN believes that greater CNG adoption could create jobs, support local businesses, and attract investment. The association also suggested integrating CNG-powered buses into the public transport system.

Furthermore, PETROAN emphasized the importance of partnerships between the state government, private investors, and gas companies to establish necessary CNG refueling infrastructure. This collaboration is essential for the successful implementation of the proposed CNG initiatives.

Next Steps for CNG Implementation in Rivers State

  • Develop a comprehensive CNG roadmap for Rivers State.
  • Establish CNG conversion centers across major transportation corridors.
  • Integrate CNG-powered vehicles into public transportation.
  • Collaborate with the Federal Government’s initiatives on CNG and electric vehicles.

Rivers State has a significant opportunity to transform its energy landscape by embracing CNG technology.
