In a significant move, the Africa Rice Center has partnered with several leading Chinese agricultural research institutions. This collaboration aims to accelerate rice innovation and strengthen food security in Africa, marked by the signing of multiple cooperation agreements and the establishment of a Joint Laboratory for Rice Research and Innovation.
AfricaRice Partners with Chinese Institutions
Under the leadership of Director General Dr. Baboucarr Manneh, AfricaRice engaged with five prominent Chinese research bodies. This collaboration was highlighted during a delegation visit to China from May 27 to May 30, 2026, which included high-level meetings and ceremonies.
A key outcome was the signing of a Strategic Cooperation Agreement with the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences on May 27. This agreement sets the stage for long-term joint research, scientific exchanges, and capacity development.
Joint Laboratory Established for Rice Innovation
Another major milestone was the establishment of a Joint Laboratory for Rice Research and Innovation with the China National Rice Research Institute on May 30. This lab will focus on implementing the collaborative efforts between AfricaRice and its Chinese partners.
