Africazine:

Zimbabwe is taking a significant step in enhancing its digital infrastructure with a new fiber-optic network.

Powertel Communications and Paratus Zimbabwe have launched the first phase of a cross-border fiber-optic network, connecting Zimbabwe to Southern Africa. The Plumtree-Bulawayo route is now operational, facilitating live traffic and marking a key milestone in a public-private partnership aimed at expanding high-capacity digital infrastructure.

New Fiber-Optic Network Enhances Connectivity

The newly commissioned Plumtree-Bulawayo route is part of a broader initiative to connect Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Africa. This project aims to strengthen regional internet resilience and improve cross-border connectivity, positioning Zimbabwe as a strategic telecommunications gateway in Southern Africa.

The first operational segment boasts an initial capacity of 800 gigabits per second, utilizing Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology. This capacity is scalable to over 10 terabits per second as demand grows.

Investment and Partnership Details

This deployment is the first result of a public-private partnership signed in June 2025. Powertel Communications, Zimbabwe’s national carrier, and Paratus Zimbabwe are jointly investing in long-distance fiber infrastructure. Powertel contributes its nationwide fiber backbone, while Paratus provides capital, technical expertise, and continental network reach.

The financing model allows Zimbabwe to maintain regulatory oversight while leveraging private-sector investment to expand critical digital infrastructure. This partnership is seen as a model for future telecommunications development across the region.

Future Phases and Regional Integration

  • A second phase extending the network from Bulawayo to Livingstone, Zambia, is scheduled to become operational in September.
  • Construction on the Bulawayo-Livingstone section is already underway and expected to be completed during the next quarter.

This project marks a pivotal advancement in Zimbabwe’s digital transformation and regional connectivity.
