The Electoral Commission of South Africa is urging citizens to register for the upcoming local government elections.

On June 20 and 21, eligible voters can register, verify, or update their details at 23,706 registration stations nationwide, open from 8am to 5pm. The commission has prepared extensively, deploying 39,000 voter management devices across the country.

Voter Registration Weekend Details Announced

The IEC has confirmed that registration stations will be available in all nine provinces. Voters must present a South African identity document, which can be a smart ID card, a green barcoded identity document, or a temporary identity certificate. Notably, proof of residence is not required for registration, although applicants must provide sufficient details about their ordinary residence.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo emphasized the importance of accurate address information for local elections, as voters are assigned to specific wards based on their residence. This ensures that voters participate in elections relevant to their local governance.

Preparation for the 2026 Local Elections

The IEC has undertaken a targeted campaign to inform voters affected by recent municipal boundary changes. This effort has resulted in the addition of 51,000 new voters to the roll and updates to 252,000 existing registrations. The commission has also improved its online registration portal and application to enhance user experience.

Furthermore, the Department of Home Affairs will provide identity document services during the registration weekend, aiding citizens in obtaining necessary documentation for registration.
