The Saldanha Iron Ore Terminal has completed a significant upgrade to enhance its export capacity.
A R4bn project has successfully installed a new heavy-duty tippler and supporting infrastructure at South Africa’s primary iron-ore export terminal. This initiative is part of Transnet’s Reinvent for Growth strategy, aimed at replacing outdated equipment to boost export capabilities.
Major Upgrades at Saldanha Iron Ore Terminal
The project included the construction of a new Eskom substation and a 1.7km conveyor belt system. Additionally, heavy-haul rail infrastructure, road bridges, conveyor tunnels, gantry cranes, and dust-management systems were integrated into the terminal’s operations.
High-mast lighting, fibre-optic connections, and control-system integration were also part of the upgrades. These enhancements are designed to mitigate the environmental impact of iron-ore handling activities.
