Africa is urged to shift from raw material exports to deeper industrial integration.

The Pan-African Manufacturers Association (PAMA) has called on African governments to prioritize refining and component manufacturing. This comes after Zimbabwe’s first export of lithium sulphate by Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, marking a significant step in the continent’s industrialization journey.

PAMA Advocates for Deeper Industrial Integration

Segun Ajayi-Kadir, Secretary General of PAMA, emphasized the importance of local processing of lithium. He stated that this move signifies a departure from Africa’s historical reliance on raw material exports. The export of lithium sulphate is viewed as a foundational step toward establishing comprehensive manufacturing ecosystems across the continent.

Ajayi-Kadir highlighted the need for coordinated policies under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to enhance value addition and technology transfer. He believes that regional supply chain development is crucial for maximizing the benefits of Africa’s mineral wealth.

Zimbabwe’s Milestone in Lithium Value Chain

The recent export of lithium sulphate from Zimbabwe showcases the potential for industrial growth in Africa. Ajayi-Kadir noted that unlocking Africa’s mineral wealth requires significant investment in industrial infrastructure and skills development. He stressed that energy systems must also support advanced manufacturing to enhance competitiveness in the global energy transition.

This development serves as a strong signal of what can be achieved with the right policy direction and commitment from African governments.

Next Steps for Africa’s Industrialization

  • Implement coordinated policies under AfCFTA.
  • Invest in industrial infrastructure and skills development.
  • Enhance energy systems to support advanced manufacturing.

Africa’s future in industrialization hinges on local processing and manufacturing capabilities.
