Geordin Hill-Lewis Elected DA Federal Leader at Congress in Johannesburg

Geordin Hill-Lewis has been elected as the new leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) during the party’s federal congress in Johannesburg.

Hill-Lewis, currently the mayor of Cape Town, succeeds John Steenhuisen, who has been credited with increasing the party’s popularity. The announcement was made on Sunday, 12 April 2026, at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

Geordin Hill-Lewis Takes Charge of DA Leadership

Geordin Hill-Lewis’s election marks a significant transition for the DA as it aims to expand its influence in South Africa. Steenhuisen emphasized the importance of growth and community outreach during his farewell speech, highlighting the need for the party to connect with ordinary citizens.

Hill-Lewis faces challenges in addressing perceptions of the DA’s racial demographics and expanding its support base beyond minority groups. The political landscape is shifting towards coalition politics, requiring strategic negotiation skills and a balance between liberal principles and popular policies.

South Africa: Key figures on DA Leadership Transition

  • Polling at 16 per cent when Steenhuisen took over in 2019
  • Polling close to 30 per cent currently

Challenges Ahead for Hill-Lewis as DA Leader

Hill-Lewis must strengthen internal unity within the party, which has faced divisions in the past. He also needs to promote the DA’s geographical expansion, particularly in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. His ability to combine service delivery with an inclusive political approach will be crucial for the party’s future.

Next Steps for the DA Under New Leadership

  • Focus on outreach to communities that distrust the party
  • Enhance internal party unity
  • Expand support beyond the Western Cape

Geordin Hill-Lewis’s leadership signals a new chapter for the DA as it seeks to broaden its appeal across South Africa.
