Capitec Bank is revolutionizing access to identity documents in South Africa.
Following a successful pilot phase, Capitec now offers Smart ID applications at select branches, with plans to expand to about 100 locations by mid-2026. This digital process allows clients to apply without prior bookings, streamlining access to essential identification.
Capitec Expands Smart ID Application Services
Capitec clients can now apply for a Smart ID at self-service terminals in participating branches. This initiative aims to simplify the application process by integrating directly with the Department of Home Affairs’ systems. Applicants receive notifications when their ID is ready for collection.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber highlighted that over 4.4 million South Africans over the age of 16 lack a green ID book or Smart ID card. By expanding access points, the initiative seeks to reduce travel distances and long queues for those needing identity documents.
