Marrakech Welcomes Cinematic Excellence: The 22nd Marrakech International Film Festival Kicks Off

Rabat, Morocco – The vibrant city of Marrakech has rolled out the red carpet for the 22nd edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival, which officially commenced on Friday evening at the stunning Palais des Congrès. Running until December 6th, this year’s festival promises an exciting lineup that showcases not just local talent but also cinematic gems from around the world.

As the lights dimmed and excitement filled the air, Moroccan and international luminaries strode the illustrious red carpet, drawing cheers from a gathered crowd and media hailing from various corners of the globe. This edition has attracted notable figures in the film industry, setting the stage for rich discussions and enthralling cinema showcases.

A noteworthy aspect of this year’s festival is its esteemed jury, led by none other than South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, a visionary known for his Oscar-winning film “Parasite.” Joining him are a lineup of diverse talents: Karim Aïnouz, Hakim Belabbes, Julia Ducournau, Payman Maadi, rising star Jenna Ortega, Celine Song, and the captivating Anya Taylor-Joy. Their collective insights are expected to elevate the quality of the competition, which includes an exciting selection of films from various continents.

A particularly touching moment of the opening night was the tribute to the legendary Egyptian actor Hussein Fahmi, who received the prestigious Étoile d’Or from actress Youssra. The evening continued with the screening of “Dead Man’s Wire,” a stirring story brought to life by director Gus Van Sant, offering audiences a taste of the impactful narratives to come throughout the festival.

Competing for the coveted Golden Star are thirteen feature films that encompass a diverse array of cultures and storytelling styles from creators like Meryem Benm’Barek and Akinola Davies Jr., showcasing the wealth of talent emerging from Africa and beyond.

Additionally, the 2025 Ateliers de l’Atlas are set to present an impressive slate of 22 projects in development from nine African and Arab nations, emphasizing Morocco’s role as a hub for cinematic collaboration and innovation.

In a fitting acknowledgment of excellence in cinema, the festival will also pay homage to legends such as Jodie Foster and Guillermo del Toro, highlighting its commitment to honoring impactful figures from the global film community.
