The Samskip Group has just launched a groundbreaking new shipping route that directly connects the vibrant Moroccan cities of Agadir and Casablanca to key European ports in Tilbury, England, and Rotterdam, Netherlands. This service, which features weekly sailings, is set to revolutionize the way Moroccan cargo reaches over 30 destinations across Europe.
Samskip Group’s CEO, Ólafur Orri Ólafsson, described this new route as a “milestone” for logistics between North Africa and Northern Europe. The decision to establish this service was not made in isolation; it was shaped by the valuable feedback from growers, exporters, and importers in the region. This collaborative approach demonstrates a commitment to enhancing trade efficiency and facilitating smoother transport of goods.
Agadir’s port will primarily focus on refrigerated and frozen products, particularly perishable goods that require careful handling. Meanwhile, Casablanca will serve a more diverse array of products, including automotive parts, chemicals, packaging materials, and construction supplies. To support this new corridor, Samskip has invested in a state-of-the-art fleet of GPS-equipped reefer containers. This includes 750 forty-foot units and 250 forty-five-foot High Cube Pallet-Wide containers, all designed with Controlled Atmosphere systems that monitor oxygen, carbon dioxide, humidity, and temperature. These innovations aim to ensure that Moroccan fruits and vegetables remain fresh and high-quality throughout their journey.
Ólafsson emphasized the importance of these advancements in the context of improving reliability for various stakeholders, from agricultural producers to industrial suppliers. By facilitating a shift in transport methods from road to sea, Samskip also estimates a potential reduction in CO₂ emissions by up to 80%, contributing positively to the environment.
