South Africa launches a groundbreaking health rewards program aimed at improving public healthcare engagement.

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has introduced WOWRewards, the country’s first rewards initiative for public healthcare users. This pilot program, starting in Westridge, Mitchells Plain, aims to enroll up to 2,000 participants who can earn up to R100 monthly for completing health-related activities.

WOWRewards: A New Approach to Public Health

WOWRewards encourages residents to adopt healthier habits by offering small rewards for completing approved health activities. These activities include booking antenatal care, participating in community exercise sessions, and keeping children’s immunizations up to date. The program is designed to support individuals in making healthier choices while utilizing public healthcare services.

Minister of Health and Wellness, Mireille Wenger, emphasized the importance of prevention in healthcare. She stated that while many private medical scheme members are familiar with rewards programs, the majority of South Africans rely on public healthcare. WOWRewards aims to bridge this gap by incentivizing healthy behaviors among public healthcare users.

Key Features of the Pilot Program

The pilot program will initially operate in Mitchells Plain, with plans to expand to Knysna in early 2027. Participants must be 18 or older and utilize public healthcare facilities. The program seeks to test its effectiveness in both metropolitan and rural settings, gathering data to inform future expansions.

Once activities are verified, rewards will be issued through the Zlto digital platform, making it easy for participants to track their progress and rewards. This initiative builds on existing community networks and aims to foster a culture of health and wellness in the region.

Next Steps for WOWRewards

  • Enrollment of up to 2,000 participants in Mitchells Plain and Knysna.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of participant engagement and health outcomes.
  • Potential expansion of the program based on pilot results.

WOWRewards represents a significant step towards enhancing public health engagement in South Africa.
