South Africa has officially established the Grasslands National Park, marking a significant milestone in conservation efforts.

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, David Maynier, declared 18 properties covering 10 225.9242 hectares in the Eastern Cape as the Grasslands National Park. This park is the first in South Africa created primarily through a biodiversity stewardship model, allowing landowners to retain ownership while committing to conservation.

Grasslands National Park: A New Era for Conservation

The Grasslands National Park is strategically located in the Eastern Cape highlands, between Nqanqarhu and Rhodes. It aims to protect under-represented grassland ecosystems and part of the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area. These landscapes are vital for water security and biodiversity, as well as for the livelihoods supported by the region’s agricultural activities.

Minister Maynier emphasized the importance of this declaration, stating it is a crucial step in safeguarding one of South Africa’s least-protected biomes. The park will be managed by South African National Parks (SANParks) under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act.

Key Partnerships in Establishing the Park

The establishment of the Grasslands National Park involved collaboration between the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, SANParks, and WWF South Africa. This partnership has been essential in coordinating the park’s creation and ensuring that conservation efforts align with local agricultural practices.

Through the biodiversity stewardship model, landowners maintain ownership of their land while engaging in conservation and management agreements. This approach allows for conservation-compatible agricultural activities to continue, promoting both ecological protection and local livelihoods.

Next Steps for Grasslands National Park

  • Implementation of conservation and management arrangements with landowners.
  • Continued collaboration with partners to enhance biodiversity protection.
  • Monitoring of ecological health and water security in the region.

South Africa’s Grasslands National Park represents a pioneering approach to conservation through collaboration and stewardship.
