South Africa is set to make history with its rooibos seeds traveling to space.

In a pioneering initiative, seeds from South Africa’s rooibos tea will journey to the International Space Station (ISS) in October 2026. This mission, a collaboration between the South African Rooibos Council and the South African National Space Agency, aims to study how the indigenous rooibos plant adapts to space conditions.

Rooibos Seeds: A First for Africa in Space

This mission marks the first time seeds from an indigenous South African species will be sent to space. The rooibos seeds will return to Earth by December 2026 or January 2027, after being exposed to microgravity and space radiation. Scientists hope to gain insights into plant adaptation, which could enhance sustainable food production techniques.

The rooibos plant, native to the Cederberg region, is celebrated for its health benefits and rich antioxidant properties. Annually, South Africa produces an average of 22,000 tons of rooibos, with half consumed domestically and the rest exported to over 50 countries.

Impact on Education and Research

The Rooibos in Space program also aims to inspire STEM education in South Africa. School students will study the growth of the seeds in space and compare them to controlled seeds on Earth. This hands-on experience will contribute to global research on plant adaptation to extreme conditions.

This initiative showcases South Africa’s commitment to innovation and positions the nation at the forefront of space-based agricultural research. It represents a unique intersection of agriculture, space science, and education, promising advancements in food security and sustainability.

Upcoming Milestones for the Rooibos Mission

  • Launch of rooibos seeds to the ISS in October 2026
  • Return of seeds to Earth by December 2026 or January 2027
  • Involvement of school students in research activities

This mission symbolizes South Africa’s innovative spirit and commitment to sustainable food production.
