South Africa is advancing its renewable energy landscape with the launch of the Impofu North wind farm.
Enel Green Power South Africa has officially commenced commercial operations at Impofu North, the first project in the 330 MW Impofu Wind Power Farms Complex. This initiative will provide renewable electricity to major industrial players Sasol and Air Liquide, supporting the nation’s decarbonisation goals.
Impofu North Wind Farm Begins Operations
Impofu North is a key component of South Africa’s renewable energy strategy. Located in the Eastern Cape, it is part of a larger complex that includes the Impofu East and Impofu West wind farms. Together, these projects will harness the power of 57 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 5.8 MW, to generate up to 330 MW of clean energy.
The electricity produced will be transmitted through a sophisticated network of eight high voltage substations and 120 km of 132 kV overhead transmission lines. This infrastructure enables the efficient delivery of power through the Eskom grid to Sasol’s operations in Mpumalanga, where Air Liquide manages the world’s largest oxygen production facility.
Community Engagement and Cultural Initiatives
Beyond its energy production capabilities, Enel Green Power South Africa is committed to fostering community engagement. The company has launched the Blowing Art Initiative, which transforms selected wind turbines into public artworks that celebrate local culture. This initiative aims to connect the project with the community and highlight the importance of renewable energy.
Under the theme “People are Energy,” South African artists Falko, Motel, and Bushy have created vibrant murals on the turbines. These artworks reflect themes of unity, heritage, and community participation, reinforcing the role of renewable energy in promoting a sustainable future.
