Dis-Chem is transforming healthcare delivery in South Africa with its new Health Hub model.
The retailer aims to tackle the fragmented healthcare system by integrating clinics, pharmacies, and digital services into a cohesive customer experience. This initiative was launched at Melrose Arch and includes features like virtual GP consultations and diagnostic testing facilities.
Dis-Chem’s Innovative Health Hub Model
Dis-Chem’s Health Hub represents a significant shift from traditional pharmacy retail to a more comprehensive healthcare delivery system. The model integrates various healthcare services to streamline access for consumers who often face rising costs and long waiting times.
The new format includes dedicated healthcare advisers and digital prescription systems, enhancing the overall customer experience. Dis-Chem’s CEO Rui Morais emphasized the importance of actively delivering care rather than merely stocking health products.
Key Developments in Dis-Chem’s Strategy
In the 2025 financial year, Dis-Chem operated over 540 clinics, staffed by 535 registered nursing practitioners, conducting more than 1.2 million consultations. The rollout of telemedicine infrastructure across all clinics facilitates virtual GP consultations and electronic prescriptions.
Additionally, Dis-Chem has expanded into healthcare funding products, launching Dis-Chem Health and acquiring a 50% stake in OneSpark in 2024. These initiatives aim to improve access to private healthcare for consumers facing affordability challenges.
Future Plans for Dis-Chem’s Healthcare Ecosystem
- Expand the Health Hub model across its store network.
- Enhance digital healthcare and automation strategies.
- Focus on customer retention and engagement.
Dis-Chem is setting a new standard for integrated healthcare delivery in South Africa.
