Rwanda’s eKash System Achieves Full Interoperability for Digital Payments

Rwanda has achieved a significant milestone in digital payments with the full interoperability of its national instant payment system, eKash.

The eKash platform now allows seamless transactions between banks and electronic money providers, enhancing the country’s digital payments ecosystem. Starting from 14 July 2026, customers can transfer funds across various financial institutions with a maximum transaction fee of RWF 20 and a limit of RWF 10 million per transaction.

eKash Enhances Financial Connectivity in Rwanda

The completion of the interoperability program for eKash marks a transformative step for Rwanda’s financial landscape. Customers can now send and receive money across different banks and electronic money providers through a single platform. This advancement is in accordance with the National Bank of Rwanda Directive No. 45/2026.

With eKash, users can pay merchants using their preferred bank account or mobile wallet, regardless of the issuing financial institution. This flexibility is expected to streamline transactions and improve user experience.

This initiative is part of Rwanda’s broader strategy to create a more connected and financially inclusive digital payments ecosystem, reinforcing the security and accessibility of financial services across the nation.
